Planet Mercury is the spec in the lower left. At least two solar prominences are also visible at the near noon and 3 o'clock positions.

Not Mercury, but Regulus (alp. Leo.).
Mercury was far apart by 10 degrees from the Sun at that time.

Not Mercury. Mercury was also much fainter and likely not visible and not in the narrow field of view of the photo.

I stand corrected. The spec in lower left is Regulus, rather than Mercury.

I was tripped up by NASAs Eclipse Brochure/Bookmark [https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/downloadables] which shows Regulus in the 9:30 position, above the ecliptic, and Mercury at the 8:00 position, well below the ecliptic. Even though the object is in that 8:00 position, it is less than two Moon diameters away from the Moons edge.
It couldnt be Mercury at that short distance. The only bright object that close was Regulus.
