Details:
The picture is a stack of 24x30s (just twelve minutes of exposure time) shots taken with a Nikon D600 DSLR and a Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 telezoom set at 200mm. Despite the cut-off of the DSLR filter in the H-alfa region I was able to improve the quality of the image and some details of the Horsehead nebula using a non local mean filter I've implemented in Matlab and which cleverly reduces the image noise with a weighted average of spatially shifted versions of the original stack.

Great job Nico! For those who have not a Ha modified camera this is a good new. Think about sharing your smart filter and stacking skills.

Thank you, Fins.
At the moment Im just evaluating the performance of the algorithm for astro imaging. The algorithm is nothing really new, search the net for A non-local algorithm for image denoising and you will find the paper which describes it in detail. At first glance it looks really good and behaves much better than a simple gaussian blurring but Ive not much experience in image processing and I still need to understand how it compares against other denoising tools.
